Beyond the Coffee Table

 Beyond the Coffee Table Reads...

Media is a major (imagine "MAJ" coming from Rachel Zoe) part of the fashion industry. Magazines, articles, blogs, shows, documentaries and books are all ways that the industry reaches out to the public. Being interested in the subject like I am, I have compiled a decent collection of fashion books and magazines. If there is only one queen in the magazine world, it's Vogue. While Vogue revolves around high fashion and sophistication, Teen Vogue is intended for a younger audience beginning to develop an interest in fashion, brands, style and trends. The Teen Vogue Handbook was released in 2010, and you can be sure I purchased it right then and there. This is a must-read book for anyone interested in going into the fashion industry, as it explores multiple different careers in every department from stylist to photographer to editor. It focuses on the classic (Karl) and the new (Thakoon) designers who have influenced or continue to influence everyday life and style. TNVH has an extensive section where it narrows down the best design schools in the world, however they do not help people who want to do something outside of fashion design. It's crazy in-depth and even lays out different career "tool-kits" for different professions (the editor's one has "Airborne" included in it to "stay healthy while juggling events and travel"). This book is definitely beyond a coffee table book, as you can use it as a reference before, during and after your schooling and ambitious career!

Happy reading!

Mini, Midi, Maxi

(#banthebrastrap)

Mini, Midi, Maxi:

There is one rule when wearing anything cropped: compensate. Unless you're trying to go for that pre-teen tumblr-esque look (to each their own), one must compensate with extra fabric elsewhere. In simple terms, cropped top + itty bitty low rise shorts = accidentally becoming the next Roxanne (get it?). SO, I added a high-waisted patterned midi skirt with my white cropped top to balance it out. I paired it with a white leather charm bracelet, turquoise earrings and white pointed-toe flats. If I had my way (and a bottom-less bank account), I would add an oversized white leather envelope clutch to finish it off.

cropped top / Forever 21
skirt / Zara
shoes / Expression (The Bay)
earrings / PacSun
bracelet / (gift from my grandma)
nail polish / Sinful Colors in Snow Me White

... So clearly I've been VERY into BANKS lately. Everything by her is absolutely amazing and relatable (who doesn't like having a personal life soundtrack). Bull in the Heather by Sonic Youth just makes me feel badass and/or like I'm starring in a horror movie... I love it.

Rainy Daze

This rainy weather we're having this summer is starting to really get me down. HOWEVER, dreary days don't have to be boring or bland. Translucent and transparent rainwear are ideal to slick the rain away, while bright colours stand out even more against the 50 shades of gray that is the outside.

White Lies

details

White Lies:

Believe it or not, these are my mother's overalls (she's got style). I love how cropped and loose fitting they are and the silver exposed zippers are my favourite. To avoid looking ten years younger in full length overalls, I put on a pair of heeled summer boots, a simple cropped halter top, a classic silver watch and my favourite felt hat. I'm not quite sure how I'll survive next year without bringing along a couple of things from my mom's closet.

hat / H&M
overalls / wilfred free (aritzia)
top / garage
shoes / mossimo (target)
lipstick / nars in schiap
watch / (mom's once again)

New Black

TWIRL
New Black:

When it comes to clothing, I almost always choose white. However, I guess it's always good to try new things. This lace crinkle babydoll dress seems to look a little more 'edgy' (barf, what an over-used word) and a little less 'sweet' in black, yet still bohemian looking. Black gold-heel booties and gold jewelry accessories compete with the lace to offset the girliness of this beach-meets-rock-concert outfit.

dress / wilfred (aritzia)
boots / lord&taylor
rings / local second-hand store
necklace / dogeared, inc.

nail polish / sinful colors in easy going (target)

Neon Moto:

This neon coral moto jacket by Yoana Baraschi is my new favourite. It has an almost Japanese kimono-like motif and is a statement piece like no other. Paired with a simple asymmetrical skort and black leather sandals, this my kind of fun eye-catching outfit. Black cat-eye sunglasses look great if you can find a pair that won't snap on you!
